As of 2019, the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period went away and was replaced by the Medicare Advantage open enrollment period. This lasts twice as long and provides more flexibility than the original Medicare Advantage disenrollment period did, as it also allows Medicare Advantage enrollees the option to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan.
Before 2019, the disenrollment period only allowed people to drop their Medicare Advantage plan and enroll in Original Medicare, Parts A & B.
You can make changes to your Medicare coverage during the Fall Annual Coordinated Election Period. Any changes you elect to make during this period take effect starting January 1 of the upcoming year. During the fall enrollment period, you can add, remove, or change Medicare Part D Rx drug coverage.
